Home Made Detergent

1 quart Water (boiling)
2 cups Bar soap (grated) (stay away from heavily perfumed soaps)
2 cups Borax
2 cups Washing Soda

Use soaps Like Ivory, Fels Naphtha, Sunlight, or Zote.

  • Grate the bar soap and add it to the boiling water and stir until soap is melted. Keep on low heat until melted.
  • Pour the soap- water mixture into a large, clean pail and add the Borax and Washing Soda. Stir well until all is dissolved.
  • Add 2 gallons of water, stir until well mixed.
  • Keep pail covered  using 1/4 cup for each load of laundry. Stir the detergent mixture each time it is used because it will have a tendency to gel.
